3 SURPRISING TIPS TO IMPROVE YOUR DAY AND BOOST YOUR MOOD

Want to change how you feel? Change your perspective and feel better with these simple tips.

An unexpected gift, a genuine compliment, a warm smile — all of these can lift the spirits on a bad day.

Unfortunately, there are some things — such as nice weather, winning the lottery or not having to wait in line at your favorite coffee store — that you cannot control or plan for.

While some factors that affect happiness are out of our control, there are always actions we can take to amp up our good vibes. The focus lies on concrete actions that are within our sphere of influence. The idea is to focus our attention on seemingly small things we can control that over time will yield significant results.

My favorite three might come as a surprise to you, but they will set off a cycle of nice occurrences during your day.

The main idea is to keep them small enough, so you will actually execute them. If you keep doing smaller actions over a longer period of time, it is much easier to form new habits and see results quickly.

1. Dress up.

While we can all agree that we are being judged by our appearance — whether we like it or not — and that making a good first impression is crucial in times when human interaction is happening ever faster, recent studies are showing that clothes not only affect how others perceive us but also how we perceive ourselves.

Finding our signature style and getting dressed up every day is our daily mechanism for expressing our intention to show up every day with a new mood or tone. From boosting your confidence and raising your mood to make people take you more seriously, sacrificing some extra AMzzzs in exchange for dressing up can help you drastically improve your day. Try it for yourself by playing around with adding some color to your outfit or making a powerful statement with accessories, livening up your look is sure to get others talking (in a good way, of course!)

2. Smile more often.

Focus your attention on smiling more often. This will make people around you return that smile, be more kind and friendly, and will ultimately contribute to improved social interactions and friendships. Start practicing by smiling at the barista at your favorite coffee shop while you get your coffee, or the cashier at the supermarket. The more you practice, the more genuine and natural it will become over time.

Research also has shown that people who smiled after a stressful activity decreased their heart rate more quickly than those who didn't. It even works if you fake smile!

3. Focus your attention on your posture.

Did your grandmother constantly tell you to sit up straight? Turns out she was right. Besides the obvious effects of improved breathing and muscle tone, studies have shown that people with good posture feel better about themselves and appear to others as more self-confident and energized. When you sit up straight, you appear taller. You will end up appearing more attractive to others because good posture is perceived as “sexy” and who knows — you might even attract “coincidental” dating opportunities into your life.
